Pine Configuration
Configuration will vary slightly depending on whether you are running
Pine on your Unix account or running the Windows version (PC-Pine) directly on your PC.
PC-Pine is a Windows version of Pine. It runs directly on your PC allowing you to save and attach files on your hard disk. It's free and can be downloaded from http://www.washington.edu/pine/pc-pine/.
1. Configuring Pine to access your email account.
Start up Pine and then from the Main Menu select Setup and then Config.
Use the Down Arrow key to scroll thru the options and change the following fields (consult the menu bar at the bottom of the Pine screen).
| Field | Value | Note |
| user-id | (your NetID) | PC-Pine only |
| user-domain | utk.edu |
|
| smtp-server | smtp.utk.edu |
|
| inbox-path | {imap.utk.edu/user=netid}INBOX | your NetID |
| alt-addresses | (your email addresses) | see Note 1 |
Note 1: Optionally list email addresses you wish Pine to recognize as your own, including both your netid@utk.edu address and your old username@utkux.utcc.utk.edu address (if you previously had an account on the old email server). This feature affects how Pine displays 'sent messages' in folder listings.
After making these changes, select Exit Setup and reply Yes to commit the changes.
Additional setup if Unix username different than NetID:
If (and only if) your Unix username is different than your NetID you will have to explicitly
tell Pine to use your NetID as your From: address, otherwise it will try to use your Unix username. To do this you need to create a "Role", which will allow you to explicitly specify a From: address.
Start up Pine and then from the Main Menu select Setup and then Rules and then Roles.
Now select Add to add a role.
Use the Down Arrow key to scroll thru the options and change the following fields (consult the menu bar at the bottom of the Pine screen).
| Field Name | Value | Note |
| Nickname | DEFAULT_ROLE | or your choice |
| Current folder type | (select "Any") |
|
| Set From | (your email address) netid@utk.edu | don't confuse with the "From pattern" field |
| Reply Use | (select "Without confirmation") |
|
| Forward Use | (select "Without confirmation") |
|
| Compose Use | (select "Without confirmation") |
|
After making these changes, select Exit Setup and reply Yes.
Now select Exit Setup again and reply Yes to commit the changes.
2. Configuring Pine to access your folders.
If you are running Pine on your Unix account and your folders are located
in your Unix home area (the usual arrangement), no further set up is required to access them.
If you have mail folders located in your email account on the email server,
you need to define a "Collection List" to access them.
From the Main Menu select Setup and then collectionList and then Add to add a definition. Fill in the following fields:
| Field | Value | Note |
| Nickname | IMAP | or your choice |
| Server | imap.utk.edu/user=netid | your NetID |
| Path | (leave blank) |
|
| View | (leave blank) | or your choice |
After making these changes, select eXit/Save. Then select Exit Setup and reply Yes to commit the changes.
