Your NetID and Password

All students, faculty, and staff at the University of Tennessee have a NetID and password. Your NetID permits secure access to a variety of Web-based applications. Applications that request NetID authentication vary by campus. For information about which application require NetID authentication, contact your local HelpDesk.

Your NetID

If you are new to the University, you may have been given your NetID as part of your orientation information.

If you don't know your University NetID, search for yourself in the UT Online Directory. Or you may enter your full name below (first middle-initial last) and we will try to find your NetID:

Note: Although students and employees are added to the online directory automatically through regularly scheduled updates, there may be a time lag. Request forms are provided to handle special circumstances, such as adding a new employee who needs services immediately, providing access to a contractor or other person not paid through the University payroll system, or adding an email address for a campus organization.

Your NetID password

To set up your NetID password for the first time, follow these instructions.

  1. Go to https://directory.utk.edu.
  2. Click the Initial Password Setup link on the left.
  3. Enter your NetID, UT ID # (which is your student ID number, your employee ID number with the leading 00, or your SSN), and birthdate and hit continue.
  4. It will say "Verification Succeeded" and ask you to set a new password.
It will take 15-20 minutes for your new password to take effect.

Once your password has been created, we recommend that you enable Online Password Reset for your account.

  1. Go to https://directory.utk.edu/passwords.
  2. Click the Enable button.
  3. Login and follow the instructions.
You will need to choose 3 questions to answer should you forget your password and need to reset it online.

Changing Your NetID Password

You can change your NetID password online anytime by logging in to the UT Online Directory and clicking the Change Password link.

NetID Password Resets

If you can't remember your NetID password, you may be able to reset it using one of the methods below.

Online Password Reset (if you have enabled it as described above)
  1. Go to https://directory.utk.edu.
  2. Click the Password Management link on the left.
  3. Click the Reset button.
  4. Enter your NetID, UT ID # (which is your student ID number), and birthdate and hit continue.
  5. Answer the questions presented and hit continue.
  6. It will ask you to set a new password.
Initial Password SetUp (you can only use this method once)
  1. Go to https://directory.utk.edu.
  2. Click the Initial Password Setup link on the left.
  3. Enter your NetID, UT ID # (which is your student ID number), and birthdate and hit continue.
  4. It will say "Verification Succeeded and ask you to set a new password.

If these methods do not work, please contact your local campus for additional information.

Chattanooga Campus

Drop by the Helpdesk in 103 Administration Building for assistance from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Call (423) 425-4000 or submit requests using Online Request Form for additional information.

Knoxville Campus

Drop by the OIT Service Center to have your password reset. The OIT Service Center location and hours are posted online at Helpdesk website. Please be sure to bring a photo ID with you.

Martin Campus

Drop by the HelpDesk in 212 University Center for assistance from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM Monday through Sunday or call the HelpDesk at (731) 881-7900 for assistance.

Memphis Campus

Drop by the Helpdesk in 721 Lamar Alexander Building, or call (901) 448-2222 or (800) 413-7830.

Tullahoma Campus

Drop by f-wing or call Richard Gulley at (931) 393-7250 or Rebecca Layman at (931) 393-7205.

Effort Certification

If you are involved with effort certification, you can request a password reset by going to Online Effort Certification and clicking on the "Forget your password?" link.

Or you may email one of the contacts below. Please specify at least the following information: NetID, Full name, Department, Campus or Unit, Office Address, Office Phone number . Someone will contact you to verify your information and reset your password.
